Buick Rainier Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on Buick Rainier?
A: To replace the park/neutral position switch, first engage the parking brake and move the transmission to neutral. Jack the vehicle up and remove the nut that holds the transmission control lever to the manual shaft, then remove the transmission control lever. Unplug the electrical connectors from the switch and take out the bolts that hold the park/neutral position switch onto the transmission and later on disconnect the switch from the manual shaft. In case you notice that the switch is not easy to slide, file the outer edge of the manual shaft and eliminate burrs. For mounting, align the switch hub flats with the manual flat of manual shaft and slide the switch onto the transmission manual shaft up to when the mounting bracket meets the mounting bosses. Mount the switch onto the transmission with two bolts finger tight. If a new switch is being installed, there will be a positive assurance bracket that will be included with it and no need of the neutral position adjustment tool. Place the park/neutral switch aligner (J41364-A) on the switch and align the two slots of the switch with the lower tabs of the tool and rotate the tool to make the upper locator pin align with the slot at the top of the switch. Tighten bolting securing the switch, to 25nm (18ft. Lbs), take j41364-a off and if a new switch was used, take the positive assurance bracket off. Connect the electrical connectors back to the switch, install the transmission control lever to the manual shaft with a nut, and secure the nut of the control lever to a torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Finally, lower the vehicle and inspect the switch to ensure correct operation, which would mean that the engine should only start when the vehicle is in the p (Park) or the n (Neutral) position. In case the switch is not working properly, then replace it.
