Cadillac Catera CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the outer CV Boot and CV Joint on the wheel drive shaft on Cadillac Catera?
    A:
Clamp the halfshaft assembly in a vise with non-marring inserts before beginning the wheel drive shaft outer joint and boot replacement process. Cut and dispose of the large boot retaining clamp at the outboard cross groove joint using a side cutter. With a side cutter tool cut off the small boot retaining clamp which secures the halfshaft bar before discarding it. The face of the outer cross-groove race demands a grease wipe before tapping the outer race assembly from the halfshaft bar using a brass drift and hammer tool yet keeping inner race damage to a minimum. Extract and dispose of the retaining ring from halfshaft bar and old boot sequence. Inspect the inboard joint for damage signs or wear conditions then acquire a replacement if required. The joint assembly requires j 35910 drive axle seal clamp pliers to add half of the maintenance kit grease into the outboard cross-groove area. Set a new small boot retaining clamp onto the boot's neck before installing the new large boot retaining clamp around the joint boot. Wipe away boot mounting area rust from the halfshaft bar with a wire brush before placing the new retaining ring onto it. Install halfshaft assembly onto the arbor press by positioning it with the outboard cross groove assembly under the press head. Then move the press head until its motion stops. Move the halfshaft assembly from the arbor press after placing the boot with the joint neck inside the halfshaft bar boot groove. Finally adjust the boot position so it points toward the outboard joint. Apply j 35910 through a breaker bar and torque wrench to tighten the small retaining clamp to 136 nm (100 ft. Lbs.) while inspecting both gap measurements. Put the remaining grease into the outboard boot but avoid any dimping or stretching or changing the original shape of the material. Position the large boot retaining clamp on the large diameter of the boot using tool j 35910 with a breaker bar to torque the clamp to 176 nm (130 ft. Lbs.) while checking dimensional gaps until precise measurements are attained.
