  Q: How to replace the left muffler on Cadillac Catera?

  A: The first step to replace the left muffler requires vehicle elevation along with proper support. First detach the clamp nut connecting the left exhaust muffler to its resonator and remove the bolts securing the muffler pipes. After supporting the vehicle with jacks continue with point two of the installation by removing the exhaust hanger insulator retainers and exhaust hanger insulators from both support rods and muffler. The left muffler requires removal from its position on the resonator. Installation procedures begin with attaching the left muffler to the resonator before installing exhaust hanger insulators onto support rods and the muffler components. Finally, secure exhaust hanger insulator retainers to the support rods and check for proper torque at every connection. Tighten the muffler pipe flange bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) and secure the left exhaust muffler to resonator clamp nut with 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). When installation is complete check all exhaust system clearances and lower the vehicle then perform a leak check of the exhaust system.
