To remove the valve lifters, first, you will need to collect the necessary tools, such as the valve lifter remover (J 3049-A). Start by taking out the lower Intake Manifold, followed by
Rocker Arms of valves and valve
Pushrods that are placed in a rack to be put back in their original positions. Next, take out the bolts and valve lifter Pushrod guide, and keep the valve lifters upright on the rack to keep oil inside them. If any valve livers are stuck by options of gum or varnish deposits use valve lifter remover (J 3049-A) to remove it. Clean out the valve lifter bores with a solvent and check valve lifter bores for excessive wear/scoring and replace the engine block if need be. Also, check
Camshaft for wear or breakage and if questionable, pull it out for further inspection. Mark, sort and organize; all components for assembly, and then clean with solvent and dry, using compressed air. Inspect the valve lufter Pushrod guides for their excessive wear, cracks, and damage, check the valve lifters for broken clips, worn Pushrod sockets, scuffed or worn lifter bodies, worn rollers, loose and broken pins, and plugged oil holes. When installing brand new lifters apply lubricant gm p/ n 12345501 (Canadian P/ N 992704) on the valve lifter rollers. If reusing lifters, make sure they are put back in their original positions. The valve lifter Pushrod guides are then installed as well as tightening the guide bolts to 16 nm (12 ft. Lbs), subsequently the installation of the valve rocker arms and pushrods, and lastly the prolongation of the lower Intake Manifold.
