To finish the installation, install the adjusters first with the Lash Adjuster installation tool (part number), then put on the rocker arms using the valve Rocker Arm installation tool (part number), and finish.

Second, remove the stationary hydraulic lash adjusters (SHLA) from the bores to clean and check the lash adjusters. It is imperatively important that one must not stroke or cycle the shla plunger in the absence of oil in the chamber of lower pressure. Thus fill the shla with clean engine oil while being careful to not scratch the pivot sphere area of the shla. In turn, install new shla's into the bores and last but not the least, reinstall the right valve rocker arms.

To service and repair left lifter/Lash Adjuster remove left group of valve rocker arms and then stationary hydraulic lash adjusters (SHLA) from bores. A valve lifter can be removed by pulling out its pin. It is then cleaned by removing any dirt, rust, and carbon particles and drying it before reinstallation. During the installation do not stroke/cycle the stationary hydraulic Lash Adjuster plunger with out the presence of oil in the lower pressure chamber. After removing the shla from right cylinder head bores you should clean and inspect all lash adjusters. First position the Crankshaft to top dead center (TDC) of the number one cylinder before installing components. Before adding engine oil to the shla maintain cautious handling of the pivot sphere region to avoid surface damage. Dip the shla bore locations on the cylinder head into clean engine oil. After bores accept the shla install the right valve rocker arms.

Begin Lash Adjuster replacement by removing the Camshaft followed by arranging followers in their exact initial positions in case they need to be reused. Apply this step after you extract both Camshaft followers and stationary hydraulic lash adjusters (SHLA) from their respective bores. Inspection and cleaning awaits all valve train components before reinstallation. Before installation add clean engine oil gm p/n 12378006 or equivalent into the stationary hydraulic Lash Adjuster (SHEA) with special attention to the pivot sphere area. Place new shla's into the bores after applying gm p/n 12345001 or equivalent lubricant in generous amounts to both the Camshaft follower roller pocket and valve slot regions. The follower must rest exactly on the valve tip so the Camshaft lobe receives complete contact. The reused followers should be placed back in their original positions. Install the Camshaft followers so the rounded end goes on the shla while the flat end faces the valve tip before mounting the camshafts.

You need to start Lash Adjuster replacement on the left side by taking off the left rocker arms while maintaining each follower's placement to its original shla position. Clean up the left Cylinder Head bore slots while checking the Lash Adjuster conditions after removing static hydraulic lash adjusters. The Crankshaft must be positioned at top dead center (TDC) for the first piston whereas technicians need to add clean engine oil to the shla while avoiding contact with the shla pivot sphere region. Clean engine oil should be used to lubricate the Cylinder Head shla bores before installing the shla into its place followed by reinstallation of left valve rocker arms.

Make certain the Crankshaft is in the top dead center (TDC) for the #1 cylinder prior to infusing the shla with a clean engine oil, without damaging the pivot sphere region of the shla. Now lubricate the shla bores of the Cylinder Head using clean engine oil, install shla into bores, and re-install right valve rocker arms.

Then, uncover the shla from the left cylinder heads bores, clean and check the lash adjusters. Check the Crankshaft position to top dead centre (TDC) of the number one cylinder before installation. Fill the shla with fresh engine oil (GM P/N 12378006 or equivalent), watching that the pivot sphere area of the shla is not to be scratched. Lubricate the shla bores of the cylinder head with clean engine oil (GM P/N 12378006 or equivalent) using a lint-free cloth, then press inward on the shla to install the shla to the bores, then all there left valve rocker arms.

Service and repair operations on the valve Rocker Arm and valve Lash Adjuster require the use of the en-47945 valve spring compressor (EN-47945). Start by taking off the camshaft cover then slowly turn the Crankshaft to expose the open valve of the affected cylinder so the cam lobe fully compresses the spring. Some engine designs restrict the placement of fasteners when attaching the tool to the Cylinder Head. Fasten the en-47945 onto the engine Cylinder Head through the coil fastener hole using the included fasteners while being careful to prevent engine rotation which could harm the valves. The engine should be rotated in a clockwise direction to position the cam at the base circle so the spring stays compressed until you can remove both the Lash Adjuster and rocker. Both the valve Rocker Arm and valve Lash Adjuster need cleaning before you inspect them both thoroughly. The valve Rocker Arm must receive lubrication while the valve Lash Adjuster needs oil installation prior to addition. Sitting the engine counterclockwise is needed to fully depress the spring by the cam lobe before removing the en-47945 from the Cylinder Head for repeating this procedure if necessary. Finally, install the camshaft cover.

The replacement process of intake camshaft and lash adjusters starts with removing the intake camshaft position actuator. Begin removing bearing cap bolts with careful turns to break the camshaft spring tension then record bearing cap positions before proceeding. Stepping further into the procedure you must remove the bearing caps and bearing cap bolts after which proceed with removal of the intake camshaft. You must set aside all roller followers alongside hydraulic lash adjusters when preparing for future installation. Extract the camshaft roller followers with the hydraulic element lash adjusters. Lubricate valve tips and all hydraulic element lash adjusters after placing them into the Cylinder Head bores with gm pn 12345501 (Canadian PN 992704) or equivalent items. The roller followers from used camshaft applications must regain their original placement on the camshaft. When installing a new camshaft you must replace all roller followers that function from this new camshaft. Place each camshaft roller follower on top of the valve stem tip next to its corresponding lash adjuster while applying gm pn 12345501 (Canadian PN 992704) or equivalent lubricant. Place the intake camshaft then apply gm pn 12345501 (Canadian PN 992704) or equivalent lubricant. First secure the camshaft bearing caps using hand torque then tighten the bearing cap bolts by 3-turn increments until they reach their final torque setting of 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). You need to complete the installation process by adding the intake camshaft position actuator.

Starting the intake camshaft and valve lifter replacement process requires the uninstallation of the intake camshaft position actuator. Rotating the bolts on bearing caps by one turn enables the removal of camshaft spring tension before marking these caps and extracting their bolts and caps. Start by extracting the intake camshaft without separating any roller followers or hydraulic adjusters which will need to be reinstalled together. Uninstall both roller followers on the camshaft and the hydraulic element lash adjusters. Install hydraulic element lash adjusters into the Cylinder Head bores while applying recommended lubrication. You should also apply lubrication to the valve tips. The original placement of roller followers must be preserved on the camshaft and the whole replacement of the camshaft requires replacement of its operated roller followers. Place each camshaft roller follower onto the valve stem tip along with the lash adjuster before you lubricate them for installing the intake camshaft while also lubricating it. Install the camshaft bearing caps and tighten their bolts by hand first before tightening each bearing cap bolt in three equal turns until it is seated at 10 nm (89 lb in). Install the intake camshaft position actuator as the final step.

It is necessary to remove the camshaft position exhaust actuator before starting the exhaust camshaft and valve lifter replacement. Each bolt attaching the camshaft bearing caps needs to be unfastened one rotation before marking the caps for their correct reinstallation position. Implement the camshaft position exhaust actuator as a last installation step.

Install the intake camshaft and the camshaft caps, tightening the camshaft cap bolts in increments of 3 turns until seated, with a final torque of 10 N.m (89 lb in).

Afterward, install the new lifters, followed by the rocker arms, and finally reinstall the applicable camshaft(s).

Lubricate the valve tips and install the hydraulic element lash adjusters.

Tighten the bearing cap bolts in increments of 3 turns until seated, reaching a torque of 10 Nm (89 lb in).

After that, remove the lifters.

Remove the lifter guide bolts and the lifter guide.

Begin by removing the camshaft cover and the upper timing chain guide.

Install the exhaust camshaft and the camshaft bearing caps, tightening the camshaft bearing cap bolts in increments of 3 turns until seated, and then to a final torque of 10 Nm (89 inch lbs).

Tighten them to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).

Clean and inspect the valve lifters.

Remove the lifters.

Clean and inspect the camshaft(s), rocker arm(s), and lifter(s), repairing or replacing them as necessary.
