2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Lash Adjuster Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the exhaust camshaft and lash adjusters on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: The replacement process for exhaust camshaft and lifters begins by taking out the camshaft cover along with the upper Timing Chain Guide. Install the sprocket holding tool (J 43655) then remove both intake and exhaust camshaft sprocket bolts before discarding them. Mark the bearing caps position before sliding the camshaft sprockets forward. Take off each bearing cap bolt with small careful turns until no spring force exists on the camshaft before you remove all bearing caps together with the exhaust camshaft. Next follow the procedure to remove the roller followers from the camshaft together with the hydraulic element lash adjusters. Apply lubrication to the valve tips while as installation follows the sequence of hydraulic element lash adjusters and camshaft roller followers with the alignment notches facing the camshaft sprocket. First install the exhaust camshaft with the camshaft bearing caps in position and tighten the bearing cap bolts by sets of three turns until they sit before reaching a final torque of 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). After that the technician should install camshaft sprockets to the camshafts while starting the new camshaft sprocket bolts by hand. Use j 43655 sprocket holding tool until the camshaft sprocket bolts reach 85 nm (63 ft. Lbs.) and an extra 30-degree bolt torque. Install the upper Timing Chain Guide before you place back the camshaft cover and apply a torque of 10 nm (89 inch lbs.).
