Service and repair operations of the idler arm require Universal Steering Linkage Puller (J 24319-01), Steering Linkage Installer (12 mm) (J 29193) and Steering Linkage Installer (14 mm) (J 29194). The first step requires elevating the vehicle and stabling it with jack stands. First remove the idler arm frame bolts and nuts before dissolving the idler arm ball stud nut as it will not be used again. The Universal Steering Linkage Puller (J 24319-01) should be used to separate the idler arm from the relay rod. The inspection of ball stud threads must be completed followed by a check of ball stud seal condition before ball stud thread cleaning. Install the frame bolts through the idler arm mounting bracket which should be positioned on the frame and tighten the bolts to 99 Nm (73 ft. lbs.). Insert the relay rod onto the idler arm ball stud while positioning the seal towards the stud then secure it using either a Steering Linkage Installer (12 mm) (J 29193) or a Steering Linkage Installer (14 mm) (J 29194) until point reaches 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) for taper seating. Use the same tool to mount a new prevailing torque nut onto the ball stud of the idler arm before running the torque to 62 Nm (46 ft. lbs.). Lower the vehicle afterward to finish by adjusting front toe alignment.
