To service or repair steering wheel and column, first turn off the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) if it is available. There's the removal of the inflator module and horn pad assembly if the vehicle does not have sir. Next, remove the horn switch. Put an alignment mark to mark the relationship of the steering wheel to the Steering Shaft, then take out the steering wheel nut. Use the steering wheel puller (J 1859-A) to pull over the steering wheel. To install, align the markings made on removal on the Steering Shaft to the steering wheel, and then put the steering wheel on the Steering Shaft. Mount the wheel nut and tighten it using a 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs) torque wrench. Reinstall horn switch and horn pad assembly if not sir equipped, the inflator module. Lastly, if equipped, turn on the sir system.
