Chevrolet S10 has Automatic Transmission Filter that is essential in the overall health of the transmission system as it cleans the dirt and other substance in the transmission fluid. This filter prevents contaminants from 'meeting' each other and circulating about, a situation that compromises the smooth circulation of fluids leading to clogging of passages and, therefore, the overall performance of the transmission system is hampered. Different models of Chevrolet S10 have applied and still apply several forms of Automatic Transmission Filters, which are internal filters placed at the rear of the transmission fluid pan and external spin-on or cartridge-type filters. Internal filters are usually possible to reach during maintenance; however, there are models where the access can be made only with a lot of disassembling. On the other hand, external filters make them easier to come by and more easily modified as needed. Also, there are performance transmission filters which have increased filtration capability and fluid flow, and thus improving the transmission efficiency and durability.

Chevrolet S10 Automatic Transmission Filter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Automatic Transmission Filter on Chevrolet S10?
    A:
A vehicle service technician should begin automatic transmission fluid/filter replacement by lifting and stabilizing the vehicle then placing a drain pan positioned beneath the transmission oil pan. The range selector cable bracket needs to be positioned aside through bolt removal while the technician removes the transmission oil pan Drain Plug and lowers the pan. Remove bolts installed at the oil pan front and sides but leave the rear bolts partially tight by turning them 4 times. You should use a rubber mallet to make gentle strikes on the oil pan which will create fluid drainage before you remove the remaining bolts and take out the oil pan together with its gasket. A proper grip of the filter allows you to pull it down with twisting motion to remove it before using pliers to get rid of the stubborn filter seal. Decompose the seal before examining both transmission fluid color and the filter for signposts of clutch material degradation along with bronze fragments for bushing wear and steel fragments as the only acceptable findings. The transmission case along with the Oil Pan Gasket surfaces require cleaning with solvent and their air drying process must complete removal of old gasket material. Apply automatic transmission fluid to the new filter seal before inserting it into the transmission housing through the use of a proper-sized socket for installation. Mount the new filter onto position before installing the oil pan assembly with its new gasket. Sealed tightly every other bolt on the oil pan to transmission case surface at 11 nm (97 inch lbs.). The range selector cable bracket must be reinstated and its bolts should be tightened to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). A small amount of gm p/n 12346004 sealant should be applied to the Drain Plug threads on the oil pan before tightening it to 18 nm (13 ft. Lbs.). Add dexron (R) iii transmission fluid into the system to reach proper level when the vehicle is lowered down but check the cold fluid measurement during the first addition while also checking for any oil leaks from the new Oil Pan Gasket.
