Chevrolet S10 Cam Gear Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Cam Gear and sprocket on Chevrolet S10?
A: Start the repair process for camshaft gear and sprocket by taking away engine front cover and Crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring. The end of the Crankshaft requires installation of a 7/16-20 x 1 inch bolt as engine rotation access but discarding either the Crankshaft balancer bolt or any components exceeding 1 inch length to protect threads. Turn the Crankshaft clockwise until both sprockets show their alignment marks at top dead center (TDC) of number four cylinder during compression. The procedure starts with unfastening the camshaft sprocket bolts before removing the camshaft sprocket together with the camshaft Timing Chain. The Crankshaft gear remover (J 5825-A) should be used to remove the Crankshaft sprocket after which the Crankshaft balancer key needs to be taken out. Before reassembly inspect both sprockets for broken teeth along with damaged areas and worn teeth which may exist on the keyway of the Crankshaft sprocket. Check the camshaft Timing Chain and view all parts with compressed air after you clean them with solvent. When installing the key insert the Crankshaft balancer into the keyway alignment which should be either parallel or mildly sloped. Position the keyway of the Crankshaft sprocket against the balancer key and then install the part using the Crankshaft gear installer (J 5590). The installation of the camshaft sprocket requires positioning its alignment mark at six o'clock with the Crankshaft sprocket fixed at twelve o'clock install the camshaft sprocket without a hammer to defend the expansion cup plug from being displaced. Use the Crankshaft gear installer (J 5590) to install the Crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring by aligning its keyway with the balancer key and push it onto the Crankshaft until it reaches a full seat position. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). The last step involves removing the Crankshaft bolt for installing the engine front cover.
