Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Classic A/C Condenser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Condenser on Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Classic?
    A:
The first step for condenser replacement starts with refrigerant recovery using the Halogen Leak Detector (J 39400-A). You'll start the work by taking off the grille then the tie bar to radiator brace bolts from behind the upper radiator support. Proceed by eliminating first the two bolts that attach to the hood latch support bracket before taking out the bolt securing the compressor discharge hose assembly to the condenser. The evaporator tube needs unfastening from its connection to the condenser through removal of the evaporator tube nut and the compressor discharge hose assembly needs uninstalling from its attachment to the condenser. To extract the condenser from the vehicle start by removing insulator retainer bolts together with upper insulator retainers. You need to add refrigerant oil during the new condenser installation process. Once installed, tighten all insulator retainer bolts and upper insulator retainers to 2.4 N.m (21 lb in). Fit new sealing washers between the condenser and evaporator tube before you install and torque the evaporator tube nut to 16 N.m (12 lb ft). To connect the compressor discharge hose to the condenser you must use new sealing washers and tighten the hose nut to 16 N.m (12 lb ft). The hood latch support bracket needs its lower bolts hand-tightened to 9 N.m (80 lb in) before reinstalling the tie bar to radiator brace bolts that require a 9 N.m (80 lb in) torque. To finish the installation process the technician must replace the grille followed by system evacuation and recharge then conduct a leak test on fittings using equipment J 39400-A the Halogen Leak Detector.
