Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How Should Front Coil Springs and Shock Absorber Be Serviced Using the CH-48845 Spring Compressor on Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: The recommended tool for servicing suspension components is the ch-48845 (Spring Compressor) since other tools cannot handle the spring strength adequately. Fitt the ch-48845 assembly to the front shock absorber first. To protect the front suspension mount from damage drivers should adjust the upper retaining bracket correctly when their vehicle contains electronic suspension control. Place the shock absorber inside the upper retaining bracket of the ch-48845 so it can achieve center position before using the ch-48845 to compress the front spring. Use an appropriate wrench to hold the shock absorber shaft before discarding the old nut and installing a new one. The first step is removing the front lower shock absorber and front spring lower insulator from the spring compressor. Then proceed to detach the front suspension strut mount along with the front spring upper seat and front suspension strut bumper and front spring upper insulator and front suspension spring. Installation starts by arranging together the front suspension strut mount , front spring upper seat , front suspension strut bumper , front spring upper insulator , and front suspension spring in the spring compressor. Place the inboard stud of the strut mounting closer than the outboard one which will guide outward for alignment. Position the spring seat stop along with the outboard stud and lower strut mount center at the notch which faces right of the outboard stud. When working with vehicles that have electronic suspension control systems check that the upper retaining bracket of the ch-48845 has the correct adjustment. Insert the shock absorber shaft into the upper retaining bracket of the ch-48845 before using the ch-48845 to compress the front spring and applying an appropriate wrench to the shock absorber shaft. Stick in the new shock absorber nut then torque it to the correct values that indicate 80 nm (59 lb ft) tightening force for vehicles with electronic suspension while also applying 20 nm (15 lb ft) force to the electrical connector. All vehicles without electronic suspension need a shock absorber nut torque value of 60 nm (44 lb ft). Finish the installation by taking the shock absorber assembly out of the spring compressor before placing it inside the car.
