  A: Replacement of valve lifters requires initial Cylinder Head removal with gasket followed by guide bolt removal. Users must remove the valve lifters and guide while paying close attention to potentially stuck lifters from gum or varnish buildup. The valve lifter remover tool identified as j 3049-a or an equivalent device will be necessary. Organize the components after removing them from the guide to successfully reassemble them. Examine the valve lifters while cleaning them if necessary. Reused lifters need to be returned to their original locations when reinstalling the parts. Clean engine oil should be used to lubricate the engine block valve lifter bores and the valve lifters before placing them into position through their guides. Position the flat areas on top of each lifter against the matching flat area in the guide bore before pushing all the lifters into complete insertion. Install and tighten the valve lifters and guide back onto the engine block while using 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) torque on the bolts. Reinstall the Cylinder Head while installing its gasket as the final step of the process.
