Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on Chevrolet Silverado 3500?
A: When replacing the lower intermediate Steering Shaft start by positioning the front wheels straight ahead and Steering Column in the lock position to protect the sir coil assembly from damage. Push the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) into the lower access hole of the Steering Column. The left charge air cooler hose requires removal on 6.6l diesel engine vehicles. Mark all intermediate shaft component relationships accurately to achieve precise system installation between the upper intermediate shaft and lower intermediate shaft and lower shaft coupler and steering gear input shaft. Start by unscrewing the bolt that joins upper and lower shafts and afterward unscrew the bolt from the lower shaft coupler. Once complete, pull the intermediate shaft assembly towards the dash to remove interference from the steering gear input shaft. Finally move the intermediate shaft downward from the upper shaft. When installing the intermediate shaft start by feeding the upper shaft portion into the upper shaft before directing the lower coupler end onto the steering gear input shaft while recognizing previously marked spots for repeated shaft usage. Fix the lower end of the intermediate shaft coupler to the steering gear worm shaft before bolting the lower shaft coupler at 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Adjust the bolt until it reaches this torque specification. Position the bolt at the upper end of the shaft before securing it to the manufacturer's defined torque rating. Vehicle models with 6.6l diesel engines require removal of the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) from below the Steering Column.
