    A:
To replace the upper intermediate Steering Shaft, firstly, insert the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) into the Steering Column lower access hole. Make sure the wheels of the vehicle are pointed straight forward and the Steering Column is set to lock before unhooking Steering Column or intermediate shaft from steering gear to avoid damage on the sir coil assembly. In order to properly install the bolt and clamp at each end of the upper intermediate shaft and connection of the upper and lower intermediate shafts, mark the relationships between these. Take out the nut and bolt from the lower shaft to upper shaft connection, then nut and bolt from upper shaft to Steering Column connection. Sliding down the intermediate shaft and the connection from the Steering Column and then accelerating the pedal position sensor are removed. Then slide the upper intermediate shaft towards the instrument panel, disengage the lower intermediate shaft and take it out of the vehicle. To install it, insert the lower end of the upper intermediate shaft through the bulkhead to the lower shaft aligning the marks set up it the removal if using the same shaft. Mount the upper end of the upper intermediate shaft to the Steering Column, and affix it with the bolt and nut, tightening the nut to 62 nm (46 ft. Lbs.). Reseal the accelerator pedal position sensor and connect the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft with the bolt and nut, proving the nut at 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Q:
How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on Cadillac Escalade ESV? Posted by Customer
    A:
Initiate replacement of the lower intermediate Steering Shaft by placing front wheels into straight-ahead position while Steering Column remains locked to shield the sir coil assembly from damage. The j 42640 (J 42640) tool must fit through the Steering Column lower access hole so technicians can mark down how the intermediate shaft components line up before installation. Specifically attend to the upper intermediate shaft to lower intermediate shaft and lower shaft coupler to steering gear input shaft relationships. Begin by removing the bolt that joins upper and lower shaft sections as well as the bolt on the lower shaft's coupler after sliding the intermediate shaft assembly toward the dash until the lower shaft's coupler clears the steering gear input shaft and separates from the upper shaft. To install the component insert the intermediate shaft's upper end into the upper shaft while also positioning the lower end of the intermediate shaft coupler. Reinstalling the same shaft requires realigning any initial marks made during disassembly. First secure the lower end of the intermediate shaft coupler to the steering gear worm shaft before bolting the lower shaft coupler and torqueing it to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). In the end step remove the j 42640 (J 42640) from the lower access hole of the Steering Column.

    Q:
Why is it important to inspect the Steering Shaft after a collision on GMC Sierra 1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
A post-collision vehicle inspection requires evaluation of the Steering Column Intermediate Shaft due to its convoluted assembly. Model C1500 contains just a single convoluted area whereas the others feature two of these areas. It is mandatory to check the convoluted areas for damage right after deploying the Air Bags. A straight edge should be applied to different portions of the intermediate shaft to evaluate its straightness during inspection. Any identified bending or damage to the shaft requires replacing it.
