Chevrolet SSR Exhaust Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the left exhaust manifold on Chevrolet SSR?
A: Raising and supporting the vehicle enables the replacement of the left Exhaust Manifold after removing Exhaust Manifold pipe nuts. After lowering the vehicle start the spark plugs removal. You should unscrew three bolts and detach the heat shield from the Exhaust Manifold to remove it. You must remove Exhaust Manifold bolts before taking out the manifold and its gasket; discard the old gasket. The Exhaust Manifold requires a complete inspection after cleaning all surfaces. To install the bolts you must first use gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) threadlock or an equivalent material on a 5 mm (0.2 inch) wide band that runs along the bolt threads. This procedure requires a clean bolt hole area with no debris or threadlocking residue as well as missing sealant from the first three threads of each bolt. Install the Exhaust Manifold using new gasket and bolts and start by tightening the center two bolts to 25 nm (18 ft.lbs.) and continue by alternately tightening between the side bolts to the outside bolts before a final tightening pass to the same torque specification. A flat punch should bend the Exhaust Manifold Gasket edge at the left Cylinder Head rear where it is exposed before installing both the heat shield and its bolts. Tighten these bolts to 9 nm (80 inch lbs.). Raise the car once more then put the Exhaust Manifold pipe nuts and torque them to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) before finally lowering it.
