Chevrolet Tracker Differential Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the pinion differential seal on Chevrolet Tracker?
A: The essential equipment for pinion oil seal replacement includes flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01), rear axle pinion oil seal installer (J 23911), and differential pinion seal installer (J 25273). First remove the bolt and retainers while making notes of the positions for all driveline components including propeller shafts drive axles pinion flanges and output shafts to achieve proper reassembly. You should remove the propeller shaft from the pinion flange but keep the bearing caps secured with tape and secure the shaft to protect the universal joints from stress. Use the j 25273 pinion seal installer to create marks on the pinion stem and pinion flange as well as the pinion flange nut before draining the axle fluid. Use an inch-pound torque wrench to determine pinion turning force and note down this value. To safely extract the lubricant and remove the pinion flange you must use the specified tool known as flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01) while holding the pinion flange. Use a seal removal tool to extract the oil seal from the pinion flange to check whether the seal contact area of the pinion flange reveals any signs of damage. Before putting in the pinion flange use the rear axle pinion oil seal installer (J 23911) to place a new seal while applying gm p/n 1050169 (Canadian P/N 992709) seal lubricant to both the pinion flange and sealing lip of the new seal. First install the washer before placing the nut onto the pinion stem to tighten until reaching the initial marks and avoid going beyond these specifications while adjusting the needed torque. To reach the intended preload level continue rotating the pinion with torque measuring tool procedures until torque match original settings. The propeller shaft gets aligned with existing marks while you hold the pinion flange with the flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01). Then install the propeller shaft and fasten it with bolts and retainers before tightening them to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.).
