GMC C3500 Tie Rod Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the tie rod end in a heavy-duty suspension system on GMC C3500?
A: To replace the Tie Rod End in heavy-duty suspensions first you must understand that it connects to the left steering knuckle spindle through a ball socket located at the Tie Rod assembly rod endpoint while the rod also connects to the steering gear through a Drag Link and ball socket with an adjuster sleeve near the pitman arm stud hole. Begin with knocking out the cotter pin from the ball stud before removing the nut attached to the ball stud. Remove the ball stud along with the Tie Rod End from the Tie Rod assembly after you loosen the adjuster clamp nut. Examine the Tie Rod End for damage while inspecting seals for wear and checking the relay rod and Tie Rod End threads for damage and inspect the ball stud threads before cleaning the tapered surfaces along with the ball stud and ball stud nut threads. The ball stud and Tie Rod End need to be fastened securely to the Tie Rod assembly before the ball stud insertion into the steering knuckle. Fasten the ball stud nut to its position on the ball stud before tightening it to 88 nm (65 ft. Lbs.). Secure the Tie Rod End by installing the cotter pin while ensuring that the slot runs parallel with the nut yet avoids nut loosening. Use the adjuster clamp to alter the front toe positioning before adequately tightening the clamp nuts to 104 nm (77 ft. Lbs.).
