Q: How to service and repair the Ignition Control Module on GMC Safari?
A: Service and repair of the Ignition Control Module starts with the removal of the air cleaner assembly and nut followed by disconnecting electrical connectors. Start by removing the Ignition Coil wire from the Distributor followed by removing studs which secure both bracket and Ignition Coil to the Intake Manifold. Take out first the bracket and Ignition Coil then drill and punch out two rivets connecting the Ignition Coil bracket before removing the Ignition Coil from the bracket. The installation process starts with attaching the Ignition Coil to the bracket through the two screws found in the replacement Ignition Coil kit. Reinstall the Ignition Coil and bracket onto the Intake Manifold by using the studs then torque them to 11 n.m (8 lb ft). Secure the Ignition Coil wire but keep it at least 1 inch away from the dip stick to stop long-term grounding or shorting events. Reinstall the air cleaner assembly along with the nut before reconnecting electrical connectors to the system.
