GMC Jimmy Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the Neutral Safety Switch on GMC Jimmy?
A: A transmission position switch/sensor repair or service starts by engaging the parking brake and moving the transmission to neutral position. Lift the vehicle and disconnect the nut which holds the transmission control lever to the manual shaft before removing the lever entirely. To disconnect the wiring harness connector do it at a point close to the vehicle harness so you don't break the park neutral position switch lead connector. After removing the bolts that hold the park/neutral position switch to the transmission you can extract the switch from the manual shaft. Use a file to trim any rough edges from the manual shaft outer surface when the switch refuses to move off. Position the switch on the transmission manual shaft by matching the switch hub flats to manual shaft flats while allowing the switch mounting bracket to touch the transmission bosses before tightening two bolts for installation. The switch must receive two bolts for fastening but these bolts should remain loose. The tool (J41364-a) needs to be positioned across the park/neutral position switch so its two slotted sections match with the tool's lower tabs. After positioning the tool's upper locator pin into the slot found on top of the switch, proceed to tighten the securing bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Disconnect tool j41364-a first before restoring wiring connector connections to the vehicle harness. Secure the transmission control lever onto the manual shaft by threading the nut until torque reaches 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Roll down the vehicle and verify switch function while testing its ability to start the engine only when the shift lever is in p (Park) or n (Neutral), making changes to the settings if needed.
