The Water Pump in GMC Jimmy cars is a critical component that transfers water and anti-freeze solution from the radiator to the engine where it gets hot as a result of combustion. Again, nearly all Jimmy models include a belt-driven water pump as a standard component; however, upgraded ice vehicles may have electric ones. Such pumps can equipped with the aluminum castings with a rotating shaft, which is based on the pulley with the impeller formed to move the coolant. The symptoms that are likely to indicate that the car's water pump is failing are leaks, noise coming from the bearings and cases where the engine overheats. For high-revving engines and race prepared engines there are high performance water pumps, these have better coolant flow than standard designs and less amperage draw. As we have already discussed electric pumps can also be used to get rid of parasitic power loss and for better control of circulation of coolant.

GMC Jimmy Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on GMC Jimmy?
    A:
You must empty the coolant from the Radiator before starting to work on the Water Pump. Begin by removing the Drive Belt before taking out the upper Fan Shroud and the cooling fan along with its associated components. For Water Pump servicing disconnect the upper Radiator Hose from the pump first and then take out Water Pump drive pulley bolts followed by the Water Pump Pulley. Sealant coating on Water Pump bolt threads. Insert new Water Pump gaskets followed by fixing the new Water Pump into place. Make sure every mating surface has clean surfaces without gasket material or burrs before assembling the parts. Install the Water Pump gaskets before putting the Water Pump onto the engine with gm p/n 12346004 sealer on bolt threads. Start the mounting bolts at 41 nm (30 ft. Lbs.) and gently put the Radiator outlet hose clamp on its end. After fitting the Water Pump drive pulley you can place the fan clutch assembly over its shroud. Install both parts and connect the Drive Belt before positioning the top Fan Shroud. After adding the proper coolant mix to the Radiator you must look for any fluid leaks in the cooling system.
