  Q: How to replace the inner CV Joint and seal on GMC Savana 3500?

  A: You need a wheel drive shaft and two clamps: large clamp " and small clamp " before replacement. Use a side cutter or any suitable tool to cut off those pieces. Start by removing the tripot housing from the wheel drive shaft then push the tripot seal toward the outboard end. The tripot seal requires the tool J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059) to remove its spider snap ring after which the entire assembly of spider, tripot bushing, tripot seal and spider snap ring needs disposal. Scrape the rust off the wheel drive shaft bar using a wire brush across the areas that will support the seal. To install the system place new clamps (4, 7) on the tripot seal before installing the seal over the wheel drive shaft. Finish by fitting the tripot bushing into the installed seal. Secure the new spider snap ring on the shaft through the J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059) application. After you put the tripot housing over the spider assembly, check its bushing seat before inserting the tripot seal's small end into the wheel drive shaft's groove. Use J 43218 Clamp Pliers - Narrow Jaw (J 43218) to squeeze the small clamp until dimension (A) reaches 0.5-1.6 mm (0.02-0.06 in), then apply service kit grease into the joint and seal cavity. Prior to reinstalling the wheel drive shaft seat the large end of the tripot seal into the groove on the tripot bushing and check the joint stroke position to set dimension (A) to 176 mm (6.92 in) while venting the joint to remove trapped air before securing the clamp with J 46588 Axle Seal Crimp Tool (J 46588).
