GMC Sierra 1500 Classic Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on GMC Sierra 1500 Classic?
A: Before beginning lower intermediate Steering Shaft replacement ensure both front wheels face forward and position the Steering Column at lock to defend the sir coil assembly from damage. The Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) needs installation through the Steering Column's lower access hole. Before handling the 6.6l diesel engine vehicles owners must detach the left charge air cooler hose. Proper installation of intermediate shaft components requires marking their connections between the upper intermediate shaft to lower intermediate shaft and lower shaft coupler to steering gear input shaft. First disassemble the steering components by performing an upper shaft to lower shaft bolt separation followed by loosing the lower shaft coupler bolt then completely remove the intermediate shaft assembly by sliding it towards the dash until it clears the steering gear input shaft. When reinstalling the identical shaft, guide the upper intermediate shaft section inside the upper shaft and the lower intermediate shaft coupler until the marked relationships are readjusted. Hook the intermediate shaft coupler's lower end to the steering gear worm shaft before securing the lower coupler bolt and upper shaft bolt. Finally, torque the upper bolt to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.) and the coupler pinch bolt to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). You need to reset the left charge air cooler hose followed by extracting the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) from its position in the Steering Column lower access hole for vehicles equipped with the 6.6l diesel engine.
