    Q:
How to replace the differential drive pinion bearing on Chevrolet Camaro? Posted by Customer
    A:
The replacement process of Differential drive pinion gear bearings starts with vehicle elevation and subsequent removal of Differential pinion flange/yoke or oil seal. To safeguard the pinion gear manufacturers should put wood underneath the Differential housing before extracting the assembly. A hydraulic press together with a wooden block helps to extract the pinion gear while you should change the bearing cup side during the extraction process by using a brass drift. The correct tools for the inner Pinion Bearing cup operation include dt 49905 (Inner Pinion Bearing cup Remover) with j-42176 (Driver Handle) when working with the 195 mm axle or dt 49906 (Inner Pinion Bearing cup Remover) along with j-42176 (Driver Handle) when working with the 218 mm axle. The installation of outer Pinion Bearing cup requires users to employ j-7817 (Outer Pinion Bearing Race Installer) with j-8092 (Driver Handle) for 195 mm axle applications or j-37758 (Outer Pinion Race Installer) paired with j-8092 (Driver Handle) for 218 mm axle installation. When installing the inner Pinion Bearing cup choose j 29609 (Rear Pinion Bearing Cup Installer) together with j-8092 (Driver Handle) for the 195 mm axle or j-22306 (Inner Pinion race Installer) in combination with j-8092 (Driver Handle) for the 218 mm axle. Insert the determined selective shim between the inner Pinion Bearing and the gear shoulder making sure the bearing settles completely. To install the inner Pinion Bearing an operator should use j-39441 (Inner Pinion Bearing Installer) for 195 mm axles or j-24433 (Inner Pinion Bearing Installer) for 218 mm axles followed by installing a new collapsible spacer. Use j-21128 (Pinion Seal Installer) for installing the new pinion seal on 195 mm axles and j-38694 (Pinion Seal Installer) for 218 mm axles while applying the appropriate axle lubricant to pinion bearings. Fixed the pinion yoke onto the pinion shaft using a soft face hammer until showing a few threads before adding the washer followed by a new pinion nut. Install the pinion nut by using j-45012 (Holding Fixture) until end play takes up just enough while maintaining proper rotating torque values for new bearings at 2.0-2.6 nm (18-23 lb in) or 1.0-2.3 nm (9-20 lb in) for used bearings on 195 mm axles. For 218 mm axles, new bearings require a torque of 2.1-3.1 nm (19-27 lb in) and used bearings require a torque of 1.0-2.3 nm (9- you should maintain small pinion nut tightness adjustments until the rotating torque reaches specified minimum levels. The Differential assembly needs reinstallation followed by proper lubricant addition and vehicle descent.
