Vehicle support and correct vehicle lifting should start the replacement process for the front output shaft seal. Use a practical tool to remove the transfer case shield before uninstalling the front propeller shaft. The front output shaft seal consists of two interlocking parts which have the force-fitting inner component attached to the front output shaft. A flat-tipped screwdriver should be placed behind the inner race of the seal to pry it forward in order to remove the front output shaft seal. A small pry bar should be used to advance the inner seal race which sits on the front output shaft before the seal can be taken out. A combination of flat-tipped screwdriver or small pry bar should be inserted into the transfer case-between the outer race of the seal and its lip to correctly remove the output shaft seal. The installation procedure requires you to fasten the output shaft seal installer (J 43484) to the driver handle (J 8092) while adding a new seal to this assembly. Attach both tools to the seal before its installation. Installation of the front propeller shaft should precede fluid level inspection and fluid top off if needed. Finish by installing the transfer case shield if present and then lower the vehicle.

The replacement process of the rear output shaft seal starts by properly supporting and lifting the vehicle. Begin by taking off the transfer case shield only when present and then the rear propeller shaft. A flat-tipped screwdriver allows the removal of the rear output shaft seal through prying action. The output shaft seal installer (J 45756) should be used for installing a new front output shaft seal. Finally, reinstall the rear propeller shaft followed by a check of the fluid level and necessary fluid addition. Reinstallation of the transfer case shield takes place only when present before lowering the vehicle to an upright position.

Begin by checking fluid levels on the system before adding fluid when needed. Next proceed with reinstallation of either the transfer case shield when present or lower the vehicle as the final step.

The first step should be to uninstall both the transfer case shield (if present) along with the rear propeller shaft. You can use a flat-tipped screwdriver to peel out the rear output shaft seal from its position. Repair the rear propeller shaft before checking the fluid level and making required fluid additions if necessary. Finish by reinstalling the transfer case shield (if present) then proceed with lowering the vehicle.

Raise and suitably support the vehicle.

First, remove the transfer case.

Use the Front Output Shaft Seal Installer (J 42738) to install the new input shaft seal.
