    Q:
How to service and repair the Rack and Pinion steering gear assemblies and replace the O-ring seals (Magnasteer) on Chevrolet Corvette? Posted by Customer
    A:
The first step for servicing and repairing rack and pinion assemblies while changing O-ring seals from a Magnasteer vehicle consists of disconnecting both cylinder line fittings at the rack and pinion assembly cylinder end alongside both fittings from the cylinder line assemblies at the valve end. First remove both cylinder line assemblies from the rack and pinion assembly then extract the O-ring seals from the valve end of the line before discarding them. Check cylinder lines for cracks and dents and damages to the threads before performing replacements as needed. Drill all fittings perfectly before using only your fingers to tighten them to minimize thread stripping and cross-threading. The valve end of cylinder lines requires installation of fresh O-ring seals. A successful power steering system flush requires power steering fluid GM P/N 1050017 or Canadian P/N 992646 (and equivalent GM Specification number 9985010) to clear contamination from all system components including hoses and reservoirs and all cooler lines. Complete the installation by attaching cylinder line assemblies to the rack and pinion assembly then apply torque values of 16.9 Nm (12.6 ft. lbs.) to valve end fittings along with 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) to cylinder end fittings.
