    How to service and repair the Rack and Pinion steering gear on Cadillac Catera? Posted by Customer

    In order to perform service and repair the Rack And Pinion, disconnect the negative Battery Cable and the Windshield Wiper assembly. Then unplug the three body harness electrical connectors and remove the ecm from the electrical box. Drain the cooling system & remove the upper Radiator Hose & evac/decompress the a/c system. Loosen the a/c evaporative line extension bolt, siphon out the power steering fluid from the reservoir, and remove the power steering fluid reservoir bracket bolt and reservoir. Drain the brake fluid in the reservoir, cut the Brake Booster vacuum connection from the intake plenum, remove the brake pipes from the master cylinder as well as removing the electrical connector from the master cylinder reservoir cap. Remove the sound insulator tabs and the sound insulator, match-mark the lower steering coupler at the splines on the Rack And Pinion and make sure that the Steering Wheel does not rotate as disconnecting Rack And Pinion coupler. Take off the steering coupler bolts and prevent the Steering Wheel from rotating using a locking device when taking off the key from the ignition. Take care in spreading the clamp to clear the shaft out of way and remove the Brake Pedal from the brake power booster link rod by unriveting it. Drive out the pin and undo the retaining clip. Unscrew the i/p driver knee bolster energy absorber, the Fuse, and the relay panel screws, then move the panels to allow access to the upper brake vacuum booster nuts. It is necessary to remove the vacuum booster nuts, vacuum booster with master cylinder, a/c evaporator line extension quick connect, and power steering hoses from the Rack And Pinion. Disconnect the electronic brake traction control module (EBTCM) assembly, the heat shield upper fastening bolt, and elevate and support the vehicle. Loosen the Pitman Arm nut and washer, making the alignment off if you are to reuse the Rack And Pinion and by use of universal Pitman Arm puller to get the Pitman Arm. First of all disconnect the lower heat shield nuts, steel gear lower, both nuts, and washers, lower the vehicle, and the element of heat shield. To remove power steering Rack And Pinion bolt, first disconnect the electrical connection from power steering fluid flow control valve actuator and after that the upper Rack And Pinion bolt, remove shim(s) if present, label the place before removing the Rack And Pinion. Turn the stub shaft from stop to stop with an 8mm 5/16" open-end wrench and then count the number of turns and turn the stub shaft 1/2 the total number of turns before aligning the mark on the stub to the v mark on the Rack And Pinion case upon installation. Install Rack And Pinion and shim or (s) then install the upper Rack And Pinion bolt tightening of it snug specification to be done after the remainder of the bolts are installed. Reconnect the e.e connection the power steering foam control valve actuator installed the heat shield tight to the upper heat shield bolt tightened to 8 nm (71 inch lbs.). Lift and support the vehicle once more, replace the lower Rack And Pinion bolts, nuts, and washers, and tighten them to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.) and the lower heat shield nuts, tightening at 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.). To install the Pitman Arm, make sure that the rubber Rack And Pinion shaft protector is installed, center the Pitman Arm to the marks on the Rack And Pinion, and install the Pitman Arm washer and nut, tightening to 160nm (118 ft. Lbs.). Lower the vehicle and install the ebtcm assembly along with connection of the power steering Rack And Pinion inlet and outlet hoses with the torque set at 28 nm (21 ft. Lbs.). Replace old o-rings lubricated with mineral oil 525 viscosity when installing the a/c evaporator line extension quick connect, then install it so that the vacuum booster and nuts are installed with torque to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Reposition the Fuse and relay panels, tighten the screws just tight enough and install the i/p driver knee bolster energy absorber. Reattach the Brake Pedal to the brake power booster connection rod by forcing the pin into the rod and install the retaining clip. Mount the lower steering coupler marks, connect the coupler, and install the coupler bolts, which are tightened to 22 nm (16 ft. Lbs.). Mount the sound insulator and the tabs, reconnect the brake pipes to the master cylinder, tightening them up to 16nm (12 ft. Lbs.), and reconnect the electrical connector to the master cylinder reservoir cap. Reconnect the Brake Booster vacuum linkage to the intake plenum, place the power steering fluid reservoir, and tighten the clamp bolt to 7 nm (62 inch lbs). When installing the a/c evaporator line extension to the cowl, use new, new sealing o-rings, grease them and tighten the a/c evaporator line extension bolt to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Lastly, install upper Radiator Hose, ecm to the electrical box, and three body harness electrical connectors, and replace the Windshield Wiper assembly. Fill the engine cooling system, fill/bleed the power steering system, recharge and leak check the a/c system along with reconnecting the negative Battery Cable.
