Steering columns in cars that have sustained frame damage or major body damage or sheet metal damage or impacts to the Steering Column must be inspected because supplemental inflatable restraint systems may cause misalignment or damage to the Steering Column. The first step is to verify that all the capsules on the Steering Column bracket assembly fit correctly into their slots then inspect for free movement under push and pull tests by hand. Check how the bracket connects to the jacket assembly because replacing the bracket becomes necessary only when capsules are not properly seated. The assembly requires replacement only if the bracket welds to the jacket assembly but at least one capsule remains insecurely seated. Use the procedure to obtain a measurement between the lower edge of the upper jacket and a selected reference point on the lower jacket for detecting assembly collapse after which you must replace the entire assembly if the measured dimensions fall outside established limits. A visual check of the Steering Shaft should be conducted to look for sheared injected plastic. When sheared plastic is detected the Steering Shaft should be replaced. A dial indicator at the Steering Shaft bottom should check for runout while steering wheel turns to ensure a maximum limit of 1.60 mm (0.06 inch).

Measure the distance from the lower edge of the upper jacket to a defined point on the lower jacket; replace the jacket assembly if the dimensions are out of specifications.
