Service and repair operations on the fluid pan of the 5l40-e/5l50-e automatic transmission begin after lifting and properly supporting the vehicle. Locate a proper drain pan beneath the transmission fluid Drain Plug before removing and discarding the Drain Plug to enable fluid drainage during inspection for any discoloration along with contamination evidence. The transmission fluid Drain Plug requires a new installation followed by tightening to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Start by removing all fluid pan bolts. Additionally, if required you should lightly strike the fluid pan with a rubber mallet to make it easier to remove. After removing the fluid pan along with its gasket you should clean all components including the magnet and pan bolts and gasket to check for any signs of damage or wear. A long screwdriver should be used to remove the fluid filter while the universal seal remover (J 23129) and slide hammer adapter (J 6125-1B) are necessary to remove the 2 fluid filter seals. When installing the transmission fluid filter unit position two new fluid filter seals on its neck and apply both transjel lubricant (J 36850) or petroleum jelly to cover them. Position the transmission fluid filter inside the case before you perform a combined installation of reusable fluid pan gasket together with the fluid pan. The fluid pan bolts should be secured to 11 nm (97 inch lbs.) torque values. After filling the transmission to its appropriate level you must lower the vehicle then inspect the Oil Pan Gasket for leakage.
