Outer Tie Rod

The necessary tools to replace an outer tie rod consist of tie rod / wheel stud remover (J 6627-A) and linkage installer (J 42089). Once you lift the vehicle and set it on support you can take out the tire and wheel. Begin by loosening the tie rod clamp bolt at the end of the tie rod adjuster then take out the outer tie rod ball stud nut. The tie rod / wheel stud remover (J 6627-A) should be used to separate the tie rod ball stud from the Steering Knuckle followed by removing the outer tie rod from the tie rod adjuster. Verify the cleanliness of the ball stud threads and check their smoothness while recording the turns needed for out tie rod removal. Thread the outer tie rod into the tie rod adjuster following the earlier count of turns while using ep chassis lubricant gm p/n 1052356 or its equivalent. The linkage installer (J 42089) should be used to maintain the 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.) torque setting for a proper seat of the taper on the outer tie rod ball stud during its installation into the Steering Knuckle. Use the linkage installer (J 42089) to lock the new self-locking outer tie rod ball stud nut after you position the adjuster and clamp correctly. Then tighten the tie rod adjuster clamp bolt to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.). Use the linkage installer to fasten the outside tie rod ball stud nut to 60 nm (44 ft. Lbs.) before reinstalling the wheel, tire combination. Complete by lowering the vehicle and adjusting the toe reading to precise requirements.
