    Q:
What tools are needed to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L engines on Chevrolet Silverado 3500? Posted by Customer
    A:
Replacement of crankshaft rear oil seals for 4.8l, 5.3l, and 6.0l engines requires these specific tools: engine professionals need one specific tool known as crankshaft rear oil seal installer (J 41479). Crankshaft rear oil seal installer (J 41479). First extract the engine Flywheel and crankshaft rear oil seal away from the rear cover. Once the new oil seal is ready for installation remove any Flywheel spacer and never apply lubrication to either the oil seal's inside diameter or the crankshaft facing. Before use apply engine oil to both the outside diameter (OD) of your new oil seal and to the rear cover oil seal bore while avoiding any contact with the crankshaft surface. Position the tapered cone with its bolts onto the crankshaft's rear side while securing them just tight enough but not beyond specification. Insert the rear oil seal onto the tapered cone which then requires gentle forward pressure against the rear cover bore. Use j 41479 threaded rod to push the tapered cone until its tip contacts the oil seal before aligning the tool with the oil seal and rotating the tool along its handle in a clockwise direction until the seal reaches the rear cover bore. Complete the repair by taking out j 41479 then reinstalling the engine Flywheel.

    Q:
How to replace the Rear Crankshaft Seal on 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L engines on Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Classic? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the engine Flywheel and the crankshaft rear oil seal (141) from the rear housing using the crankshaft rear oil seal installer (J 41479) to replace the crankshaft rear oil seal on engines of 4.8l, 5.3l, and 6.0l. Before installation it is necessary to make sure that the Flywheel spacer should be removed if needed and avoid lubricating the inside diameter (ID) of oil seal or crankshaft surface. Always use the new oil seal and note that the new type is a reverse lip style seal that has the shape this side out in order to orient it correctly. Apply clean engine oil to the outside diameter (OD) of the oil seal and the rear housing oil seal bore. Mount the tapered cone and bolts to the back of the crankshaft, securing them in place without overtightening the bolts. Align the rear oil seal on the tapered cone with the this side out facing away from the engine, and then drive the j 41479 threaded rod into the tapered cone up to where it strikes the oil seal. Foresight the oil seal into the tool and rotate the handle of the tool clockwise until the oil seal is tucked upto the rear cover and bottoms in the cover bore. Finally, take out the j 41479 and reintroduce the engine Flywheel.
