    Q:
How to replace the brake shoes on Chevrolet Colorado? Posted by Customer
    A:
You need two tools for Brake Shoe replacement: first use drum to Brake Shoe clearance gage (J 21177-A) along with Brake Shoe spanner & spring remover (J 38400). Start with vehicle elevation followed by removal of the rear Brake Drum assembly. Clean the rear brake shoes by using denatured alcohol. The retractor spring tension will decrease as the brake shoes reach their lowest position before removing it. The adjuster assembly should be removed from the vehicle and then channel locks should detach the retractor spring from the secondary Brake Shoe while you extract the secondary Brake Shoe from the backing plate. You should repeat the same installation steps for the Brake Shoe positioned in the primary position. A pocket flat-blade screwdriver should be used to press the lock tab on the park brake cable retainer while pushing the cable forward to release its connection with the retainer. Extract the park brake cable from the lever maintaining attachment of the return spring. You should apply high-temperature silicone grease on the contact points between the rear brake shoes and the backing plate. The park brake cable installation requires you to insert it into the lever until you detect a snap or hear a clicking sound that indicates proper position. Install the retractor spring into the retaining bracket at the backing plate's bottom section and afterward place the spring on the backing plate before applying channel locks to the primary Brake Shoe. Users can place the secondary Brake Shoe onto the backing plate through the combination of the Brake Shoe spanner & spring remover (J 38400) or channel locks which will install the retractor spring in the secondary Brake Shoe. The park brake adjusting hardware must be installed after which the rear brake shoes need adjustment through the use of Brake Shoe adjusting tool (J 22364-01). Position the rear Brake Drum then release the vehicle to its lowered height.

    Q:
How to replace the brake shoes on GMC Canyon? Posted by Customer
    A:
The necessary tools for Brake Shoe replacement include drum to Brake Shoe clearance gage (J 21177-A) and Brake Shoe spanner & spring remover (J 38400). First lift the vehicle while you remove its rear Brake Drum component. Before removing the brake return spring users should clean the rear brake shoes with denatured alcohol and adjust them to their lowest position in order to reduce spring tension. Start by removing the adjuster assembly and subsequently removing the retractor spring from the secondary Brake Shoe via channel locks before you take off the secondary Brake Shoe from the backing plate. Rephrase the procedure for the main Brake Shoe and remove its retractor spring at the same time. The pocket flat-blade screwdriver should be used to press the lock tab for the park brake cable until the retainer releases it after removing the return spring. Detach the park brake cable from the lever but keep the return spring on the cable during removal. Silicone grease must be applied to the Brake Shoe-backing plate joint where installation will begin and the park brake cable must be inserted into its lever until a snap or audible click signals proper seating. Fasten the retractor spring onto the backing plate while using channel locks to fix it into the primary Brake Shoe. Install the secondary Brake Shoe on the backing plate while using the Brake Shoe spanner & spring remover (J 38400) or channel locks to place the retractor spring within the secondary Brake Shoe. Fit the park brake adjusting hardware then adjust the rear brake shoes by using the specified Brake Shoe adjusting tool (J 22364-01). Lower the vehicle while installing the rear Brake Drum as the final step.
