To service and repair the rear compartment lid hinge torque rod you will first need to prop the compartment lid to the fully open position so that it will not fall down when removing the torque rods. Scribble on the position of the torque rod, prior to its removal. Use the following tool: Trunk Deck Lid Torsion Rod Adjuster (J 39719) and the following tool: Torsion Rod Adjustment Bar (J 39384-10) or Equivalent tools and remove the torque rod from the adjusting notch and then remove it from in the rear compartment lid hinge. In preparing for installation, you clamp the torque rod with to the compartment lid hinge and apply the same tools to attach the torque rod with to the adjusting notch. Change the operating effort by adjusting the end of the torque rod into a lower adjusting notch to be increased to raise the efforts to raise the lid and reduced efforts to close the lid or into a higher adjusting notation to be reduced to ease the effort to turn the lid and to increase closing efforts of the lid. For Pontiac models use adjusting notch position for the rear compartment spoiler and for Chevrolet models use adjusting notch position .
