2000 Buick Park Avenue CV Boot Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the inner CV Boot and CV Joint of the axle shaft assembly on 2000 Buick Park Avenue?
A: Begin Axle Shaft assembly inner joint and boot replacement by acquiring one must use three key tools for this task: snap ring pliers (J 8059) and earred clamp tool (J 35910) as well as small swage tool (J 41048). Snap ring pliers (J 8059), earred clamp tool (J 35910), and small swage tool (J 41048). Check the transmission sealing surface on the halfshaft for corrosion before cleaning it with 320 grit cloth as needed. A hand grinder enables swage ring cutting while protecting the tripot housing and the large boot retaining clamp removal requires side cutters followed by proper disposal. Use care to split the halfshaft inboard boot away from the trilobal tripot bushing before moving the boot away from the joint. Extract the housing of the tripot joint spider as well as the halfshaft bar. Then pull out the trilobal tripot bushing from inside the housing unit. Position the snap ring pliers (J 8059) between the halfshaft bar and carefully expand the spacer ring to reposition both the tripot joint spider and the spacer ring along the halfshaft bar. Use cleaning solvent to remove all old grease and contaminants from the needle rollers, tripot balls, and housing after removing the halfshaft bar retaining ring from its groove. Check the halfshaft inboard boot alongside the tripot joint spider assembly and housing along with the trilobal tripot bushing and needle rollers for evidence of damage or wear. During assembly you need to put a new small boot clamp on the small end of joint boot before putting it onto the halfshaft bar. Feed the joint boot's small end into the joint boot groove created on the halfshaft bar. Mount small swage tool (J 41048) in a vise then position the outboard end of the halfshaft assembly inside the tool while correctly aligning the boot neck to the bottom die. Secure the assembly bolts lightly yet avoid creating any harmful constriction spots near the halfshaft inboard boot. Use a ratchet wrench to add torque at 180 degrees to each bolt of the small swage tool (J 41048) during boot alignment of the halfshaft inboard boot, housing, and swage ring. Use snap ring pliers (J 8059) to install the spacer ring onto the halfshaft bar but ensure the tripot joint spider's counterbored face faces the end of the halfshaft bar. Push the tripot joint spider assembly toward the spacer ring and install the halfshaft bar retaining ring into its designated groove. Pump service kit grease into the halfshaft inboard boot while saving rest of grease for the housing packaging process. Insert the trilobal tripot bushing to the housing and secure the larger new boot retaining clamp to the halfshaft inboard boot. Afterward, slide the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly. Shaping of the halfshaft inboard boot should be checked before setting the joint assembly into its proper vehicle dimension. Use the earred clamp tool (J 35910) to torque the large boot retaining clamp against halfshaft inboard boot and tripot housing while aligning them during the latching process. Apply torque to 176 nm (130 ft. Lbs.) with a breaker bar supported by a torque wrench when possible.
