2000 Chevrolet Camaro Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a two-piece drive shaft on 2000 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: Begin the replacement of two-piece propeller shaft by maintaining the vehicle in a secure elevated position. You must note how the propeller shaft relates to the pinion gear yoke. Unfasten the bolts/screws on the center support bearing until you can remove this component along with its washers from the torque arm. First remove the propeller shaft bolts/screws together with the propeller shaft retainers by supporting the shaft while it is being taken out. Move the Slip Yoke out of the transmission hollow by withdrawing it from its position and advance propeller shaft (1 and 4) backward through the housing. The loose bearing caps need taping together for avoiding needle roller bearing loss. Check the transmission output shaft splines together with the Slip Yoke outer diameter while inspecting for burrs or damage or twisting or wear to ensure the splines match exactly between the two components. Inspection of the pinion gear yoke Universal Joint cap interface should be conducted to check for burrs or foreign matter. The Slip Yoke requires chassis lubricant during installation before mounting it to the transmission output shaft where both the pinion gear yoke mark aligns with the propeller shaft mark. Fasten the rear propeller shaft section onto the pinion gear yoke piece while installing the rear Universal Joint component to the yoke which should have the bearing caps correctly situated. Install the propeller shaft retainers after positioning the propeller shaft bolts/screws evenly at 22 nm (16 ft. Lbs. Torques). Attach washers together with center support bearing to torque arm as you secure the center support bearing with bolts or screws that require a torque setting of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Finally, lower the vehicle.
