Chevrolet Camaro Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace a one-piece Drive Shaft on Chevrolet Camaro?
A: The vehicle must be lifted along with proper support for the replacement of the one-piece propeller shaft. Before removing propeller shaft bolts and retainers make a mark that documents the propeller shaft association with the pinion gear yoke. Also maintain support for the propeller shaft during removal. Move the propeller shaft rearward under the housing after you withdraw the Slip Yoke from the transmission and tape bearing caps together to stop needle roller bearing loss. An inspection should be done for burrs at both the transmission output shaft splines and Slip Yoke outer diameter and for damage or twisting and wear at the Slip Yoke splines. The transmission output shaft splines must match perfectly with the outer splines of the Slip Yoke . The Universal Joint cap mating surface of the pinion gear yoke requires inspection for burrs as well as foreign material. Use chassis lubricant on the Slip Yoke before installing it onto the transmission output shaft by matching its reference marks with the pinion yoke. Place the rear section of the propeller shaft with the pinion gear yoke and attach the rear Universal Joint to the pinion gear yoke while making sure bearing caps remain in their proper position. First secure the propeller shaft with its retainers. After that mount the propeller shaft bolts by evenly torquing them to 22 nm (16 ft. Lbs.). Finally, lower the vehicle.
