2000 Chevrolet Corvette Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2000 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: To replace the park/neutral position switch, first lift and adequately support the vehicle. Take off the intermediate Exhaust Pipe and let the LH Muffler assembly dangle out of the way. Shift the transmission to neutral and take off the nuts fixing the transmission shift control cable bracket to the transmission, but be careful not to pull the shift control cable too hard. Release the shift control cable end clip gently from the transmission shift lever stud, and reposition the transmission Shift Cable and bracket. Remove the park/neutral position switch electrical connectors and remove the range selector (shift) lever retaining nut and the range selector (shift) lever using a wrench on the transmission manual shaft wrench flats to prevent the shaft from turning. Make sure the transmission is still in neutral before you proceed to remove the switch mounting bolts and slide off the switch from the manual shaft. For installation, use the park/neutral position switch aligner (J 41364-A) which is to be aligned with the transmission manual shaft with the flats of the switch hub to the flats on the manual shaft. Slide the switch up the shaft, then position the mounting bracket against the transmission case, and install and tighten the park/neutral position switch mounting bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Remove the J 41364-A switch, position the transmission range selector (shift) lever on the manual shaft in an upright position and, with your wrench on the shaft wrench flats, install and tighten the range selector (shift) lever retaining nut to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Connect the park/neutral position switch electrical connectors, fit the transmission shift control cable and bracket, also align the shift control cable end onto the transmission shift lever stud, and securely clip the shift control cable end clip. Lastly, screw the nuts that hold the transmission shift control cable bracket to the transmission with a torque of 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.), reinstall the intermediate Exhaust Pipe, shift the transmission into park, and lower the vehicle.
