2000 Chevrolet Prizm Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2000 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: The repair process starts with installing insulation paper then sequencing inside insulator with long side and short side followed by contact plate terminal bolt o-ring packing outside insulator wave washer and nut to terminal 30 without tightening the nut yet. Continue by attaching the inside insulator with long side and short side , contact plate , terminal bolt , o-ring , outside insulator , wave washer , and terminal nut to terminal c while leaving the nut loose for now. Even contact plate pressure during nut tightening prevents insulator interior cracking that occurs from excessive nut torque. Press down contact plates within the solenoid assembly using a 20x37x40 mm wooden block (0.79x1.46x1.57 in) before tightening nuts to 17 n.m torque (12 lb ft). The contact surfaces of the contact plates and plunger need cleaning with a dry cloth before installing the solenoid plunger followed by end cover assembly where the nuts get tightened to 2.5 n.m (23 lb in). Add a small amount of lubriplate lubricant gm p/n 1050109 or its equivalent to front Armature bearing along with rear Armature bearing and idler gear roller bearing. In this sequence position the Armature followed by installing the brush holder and wiring up the brush system. Position the spring away from the brush holder and install the brush with a screwdriver until secured in position before securing the end cover to the field frame by applying new o-rings and totally tightening the screws to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Place the steel ball inside the clutch and drive assembly before you add the idler gear roller bearing along with idler gear , clutch and drive assembly , and return spring within the drive housing . The drive housing must be fixed to the solenoid assembly using two bolts tightened to 6 n.m (52 lb in), although the field frame installation requires a new o-ring and requires 6 n.m (52 lb in) torque on its two through bolts. Connect the solenoid lead wire and nut to the solenoid assembly by tightening the nut to 6 n.m (52 lb in). Then install the Starter motor onto the vehicle.
