• Q: How to replace the starter motor on 2001 Chevrolet Prizm?

  A: The starting process begins by disconnecting the negative (-) battery cable. Start by unbolting the upper mounting bolt then raise and support your vehicle. First disconnect the Starter motor electrical connector after taking out the right side splash shield along with its 6 bolts. Starting with the positive (+) battery cable and Starter Solenoid retaining nut removal you can proceed to remove the lower mounting bolt to extract the Starter motor. Begin by positioning the Starter motor before you tighten the lower mounting bolt with only finger force. Upon completing the 37 n.m (27 lb ft) tightening of the upper mounting bolt follow by lowering the vehicle without dismounting it from the hoist. Put the vehicle up again before tightening the lower mounting bolt to a torque of 37 n.m (27 lb ft). Reinstall the Starter motor electrical connector before adding the positive Battery Cable with its retaining nut to the Starter Solenoid and tightening the retaining nut to 8.8 n.m (78 lb in). The repair is completed by first reconnecting the right side splash shield using its six mounting bolts followed by lowering the vehicle then finishing with the correct connection and proper tightening of the negative (-) battery cable to 15 n.m (11 lb ft).
