- Q: How to Remove and Overhaul Brake Calipers on 2000 GMC C3500?A: Elements in the delco brake system require you to first drain two-thirds of the master cylinder's fluid before starting repairs. Set the car on stands that will offer secure support. Unscrew the two lug nuts holding the rotor, keep them aside and lift the tire and wheel off the car. Ease the Piston with pliers adjusted over inboard lining tab and brake caliper flange, lift off the brake hose from the inlet fitting. After that, remove the bolts (1), (2) and the bolt boots (1), (2) before you remove the caliper. Check inside the caliper for any liquid coming out; should you see any signs of leakage, complete the brake caliper overhaul. Get rid of the bolt seals in the mounting bolts and remove the bushings as well. Inspect the mounting bolts as well as the sleeves and change any corroded pieces without trying to brush or polish away the corrosion. Before changing to a new rotor, clear the caliper and install a new brake hardware kit and repeat this with every rotor swap. Look over the bolt boots to check for damage such as nicks or corrosion and change any parts that you find damaged. Install the bushings and seals, add some gm p/n 18010909 or the equivalent lubricant and then install the cap. Attach the new bolt boots (1), (2) and caliper, then put gm p/n 18010909 or a similar lubricant into the holes between the bushings. Put the mounting bolt and sleeve assembly in place and tighten the bolt to 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.) while keeping the bolt boots safe. Join the brake hose to the caliper firmly and tighten the bolt on the hose to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). Check how much space there is between the caliper and the bracket stops; if more space is needed, take out the caliper and use a file to clear out the bracket ends so that there is a total clearance of 0.26 to 0.60 mm (0.010 to 0.024 inch). Calculate the gaps one at a time and sum them up. Pull the brake pedal all the way after you notice it's firm and after that, check the fluid level in the master cylinder. Next, put the tire and wheel onto the car.
