2000 GMC Safari Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Crankshaft Seal on 2000 GMC Safari?
A: Large repairs of crankshaft main bearing seals begin by removing both the Transmission Assembly and engine Flywheel. To access the crankshaft rear oil seal you should insert your tool at the housing's access notches then gently pry the seal free. Remove the outdated seal while cleaning all debris and rust existing in that space. The rear main seal installer (J 35621-B) serves as the proper tool for installation. The process requires limited application of clean engine oil onto four distinct surfaces. These components include the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bore and the engine Flywheel pilot flange outside diameter and the Flywheel locator pin outside diameter. Additionally, the seal surface of the crankshaft demands oil application. Check the flange of the rear main seal installer (J 35621-B) for damage then carefully remove minor irregularities with fine grade emery cloth while avoiding contact between oil or lubricants and the seal lip surface. Using clean engine oil apply a layer onto the outside diameter of the crankshaft rear oil seal's sleeve. Position the crankshaft rear oil seal onto the rear main seal installer (J 35621-B) before placing it onto the rear of the crankshaft and apply only moderate torque with the tool bolts. Position the seal properly by installing it with minimal protrusion while maintaining a square fit between the housing to avoid a seal failure. Position the wing nut found on the rear main seal installer (J 35621-B) to push the seal until it reaches the housing's bore depth and let go of the tool. To finish up remove the rear main seal installer (J 35621-B) tool then wipe clean any remaining engine oil before reinstalling the transmission and Flywheel.
