Q: How to replace the universal joint with an external snap ring on 2000 GMC Safari?
A: Acquiring the necessary equipment starts your project of universal joint replacement with external snap rings. The tool set includes two items: U Joint Bearing Separator (J 9522-3) and U Joint Bearing Spacer Remover (J 9522-5). Position the propeller shaft horizontally on a press table with one yoke clamped down to protect the propeller shaft tubing. Make clear markings on the propeller shaft to determine transmission and transfer case side from axle side. Use pliers to pinch snap rings at their ends then pull them off. A stuck snap ring should be released through gentle tapping of the bearing cup. Use the lower yoke ear to insert into a 30 mm (11/8 inch) socket then apply pressure through the U Joint Bearing Separator (J 9522-3) to remove the lower bearing cup. Press the U Joint Bearing Spacer Remover (J 9522-5) under the bearing cup when it remains partially inside. Afterward you can proceed with additional pressure. You need to spin the propeller shaft until the other bearing cup exits before taking out the cross and all pieces remaining in the yoke. Check retaining ring grooves together with bearing cup bores for damage then cleanse as required. To install the universal joint begin by placing the bearing cups onto new journals and then grease the needle bearings before inserting the cups halfway through the yoke. Place the cross into the yoke while allowing the trunnion to move freely and apply pressure to drive the bearing cup flush with the yoke's ear. Attach the bearing cups to opposing sides while maintaining trunnions in proper alignment. When inserting the second bearing cup into the yoke check for free movement of trunnions and press until the retainer groove becomes visible. When installing the bearing retainer tighten it until it settles correctly and a dead blow hammer might be used to modify the yoke position slightly. Finally, reinstall the propeller shaft.
