- Q: How to replace the rear axle shaft on an 8.6 or 9.5 Inch Axle on 2000 GMC Savana 3500?A: To replace the rear Axle Shaft in an 8.6 or 9.5 inch axle, lift the vehicle and remove the tire and wheel assembly then the brake drums. Next, remove the rear axle housing cover and gasket and then remove the pinion shaft locking bolt. In the case of axles without locking Differential, take off the pinion shaft. For those with a locking Differential, partial withdrawal of the shaft while at the same time rotate the case until the pinion shaft is in contact with the housing. Use a screwdriver or screwdriver, of a similar type, rotate the lock until it lines up with the thrust block with the Differential, and insert the flange of the Axle Shaft in the direction of the Differential and shut down the c-lock at the button-end of the Axle Shaft. It is important that one does not rotate the Axle Shaft while removing them to prevent misaligning the gears. Trial and remedy all bad parts: after removing the Axle Shaft, checking all parts for any damage and replacing if necessary. In the process of installation simply slide the Axle Shaft into the rear axle housing ensuring that the splines lock with the Differential side gear. For those axles that do not have a locking Differential, insert the lock onto the button end of the Axle Shaft. For those with a locking Differential, make sure that the pinion shaft is only partially pulled out and it has the c-lock placed on the Axle Shaft with the two ends being flush with the thrust block. Take the shaft flange and pull it outward in order to seat it to the lock in the Differential gear and align the hole in the pinion shaft with the hole in the Differential case for the bolt. Mount the new pinion shaft locking bolt, which should be tightened to 36 nm (27 ft. Lbs.) for an 8.6 inch axle, or to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) for a 9.5 inch axle. Finally, put the rear cover and gasket, brake drums, and tire and wheel assembly down, fill the rear axle with the appropriate fluid and lower the vehicle.
