    A: Begin the replacement of the idler shafts for the 8.6 or 9.5-inch spring block by lifting the vehicle and removing the wheel with the drum. Begin by removing the rear axle housing cover with its gasket before moving to the pinion shaft locking bolt. The first step requires removal of the pinion shaft from axles without locking differentials. People must partially extract locking Differential shafts to rotate the case and achieve pinion shaft contact with the housing. Insert a screwdriver or substitute tool into the Differential case lock to turn it facing the thrust block until proper alignment happens. When inserting the Axle Shaft flange towards the Differential you must remove the c-lock from its home at the shaft's button end. The correct operation of the gears depends on avoiding any shaft rotation during axle removal. Check the housing for any signs of damage before you install the Axle Shaft. If any parts show damage replace them before continuing. To install the Axle Shaft properly position it inside the rear axle housing where the splines match the Differential side gear. The Axle Shaft button end requires installation of the lock device during situations without Differential locking features. People with locking differentials need to maintain partial shaft withdrawal during installation while placing c-lock between Axle Shaft ends which touch the thrust block form. Seating the lock in Differential gear requires pulling the shaft flange outside before you use the pinion shaft hole to align it with the Differential case bolt hole. Use the new locking bolt on the pinion shaft while following torque specifications of 36 nm (27 ft. Lbs.) for 8.6 inch axles and 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) for 9.5 inch axles. Install the rear cover with gasket after fitting brake drums and wheels followed by proper fluid replacement in the rear axle and letting the vehicle lower to floor.
