2001 GMC Savana 3500 Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a two-piece drive shaft on 2001 GMC Savana 3500?
A: A proper first step when replacing a two-piece propeller shaft requires the vehicle to be lifted while marking key areas between the rear propeller shaft and pinion yoke and front propeller shaft and the transmission. This marks the initial position of all driveline components before the start of disassembly. Carefully remove the four bolts and one yoke retainer from the rear axle pinion yoke by avoiding the use of tools between the yoke and Universal Joint because this could result in damaged injection joints. The rear propeller shaft needs to be withdrawn first from the rear axle pinion yoke by sliding forward and then from the front propeller shaft stub shaft through backward motion before extraction from the vehicle. To begin separation remove the three center bearing support bolts before pulling the front propeller shaft out from the transmission. While installing the front propeller shaft into the transmission maintain reference marks from removal as you align it and position the center bearing at right angles to the shaft for safety. The front propeller shaft hanger receives three center bearing support bolts for installation which should be tightly fastened at 58 nm (43 ft. Lbs.). Insert the rear propeller shaft Slip Yoke onto the front propeller shaft stub shaft while watching for the tooth missing on the yoke to fit with the bridged tooth on the splined shaft. Position the rear propeller shaft onto the rear axle pinion yoke by aligning reference marks and fasten it with the one yoke retainer bolted to four studs. Tighten the yoke retainer bolts to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). You should lubricate the Slip Yoke splines before lowering the vehicle.
