2000 GMC Savana 3500 Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a two-piece drive shaft on 2000 GMC Savana 3500?
A: The maintenance process for two-piece propeller shaft replacement begins with vehicle suspension using safety stands and follows with marking steps. Apply markings to both connect the rear propeller shaft to the pinion flange with the front propeller shaft and also connect the front shaft to the yoke at the transmission. First detach the bolts that secure the pinion flange together with the retainers which also fasten at the pinion flange. The front movement of the propeller shaft disengages the pinion flange Universal Joint. At this point, remove the rear propeller shaft by sliding it off the spline but prevent unsupported incline that could lead to joint fracture. Use tape bearing cups to secure universal joints and yokes in order to keep needle bearings from escaping. The engineer should clean all mating surfaces including bearing caps and bearing straps as well as pinion yoke by using crocus cloth or 400 grit sandpaper. First disconnect the bolts between the hanger bracket and center bearing support before removing the propeller shaft and center bearing support from the vehicle and finally taking out the propeller shaft from the transmission. All parts need an approved solvent cleaning before inspecting the front Slip Yoke outer surface for burrs and verifying bearing cup seating uniformity with correct splines alignment of the Universal Joint while checking for spline wear and incorrect installation. The front propeller shaft should get installed into the transmission after lubricating its Slip Yoke splines while lining up the index splines. Screw in the bolts at the center bearing support to the center bearing hanger while tightening these retaining bolts to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). After shaping the reference marks on the rear shaft you should place its front end onto the front shaft splines while pushing it forward until the rear Universal Joint connects with the pinion flange. Fasten the rear Universal Joint inside the axle pinion flange before installing the retainers along with bolts. Apply torque of 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) to the center bearing retaining bolts then remove safety stands when lowering the vehicle.
