2001 Buick Century Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2001 Buick Century?
A: Install the Brake Master Cylinder onto a vise to work on it safely. Keep the primary Piston's rear part exposed at all times. Before unscrewing the cap you need to clean the external master cylinder reservoir cabinet around the cap. After taking out the cap and diaphragm inspect them both for holes, breaks, damage, or shape distortions and replace any disabled parts. Separate the master cylinder reservoir and insert a smooth round tool to push down on the primary Piston to remove its parts one after the other from the cylinder bore. Open the inlet ports at the rear and cylinder then push filtered no-lube air into the front port to let air take the secondary Piston out with the primary Piston seals return spring. Throw away the main Piston unit, Piston retainer, and seal components from the secondary Piston. Wipe interior and exterior parts of the master cylinder, secondary Piston and return spring with denatured alcohol and examine them for damage before replacing the master cylinder. Apply filtered non-lubricated air to dry the parts and use delco supreme 11 brake fluid (GM P/N 12377967 equivalent) to lubricate the master cylinder bore, secondary Piston, return spring, and overhaul components from a sealed clean container. Insert the lubricated new primary seal assembly with its retainer onto the secondary Piston and add the new secondary seal. Place the lubricated return spring and secondary Piston unit as well as the lubricated primary Piston assembly into the cylinder bore. Press down the primary Piston using a special tool shaped as a slight ball and insert the new Piston retainer. Place the master cylinder reservoir back into position then mount its cap and diaphragm before putting the cylinder unit back into the vehicle.
