2002 Buick Century Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2002 Buick Century?
A: After detaching the master cylinder you need to place its mounting flange in a bench vise and make sure you can reach the back of the primary Piston. Check the reservoir area outside the cap for damage before taking off the cap and checking both components for harm to replace them when needed. After separating the cylinder reservoir attach a round tool to press the main Piston down and take off its retention ring and single Piston unit. Insert plugs into the cylinder ports while running filtered non-lubricated low-pressure air into the outlet port to push out the secondary Piston assembly combined with the primary and secondary seals and return spring. Throw away both the primary Piston parts plus the Piston retainer and seals from the secondary Piston. Thoroughly clean the inside and outside areas of the master cylinder, secondary Piston, and return spring using denatured alcohol or an equivalent solution and inspect them for damages such as cracks, scoring, pitting, and corrosion before replacing the entire master cylinder if any findings are detected. Blast all parts with air filtering that excludes oil and apply delco supreme ii brake fluid gm p/n 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667) or dot-3 equivalent to the cylinder bore, secondary Piston, return spring, and all service components. Add the lubricated new primary seal and retainer plus secondary seal to the secondary Piston and put in the lubricated return spring along with the secondary Piston assembly into the cylinder block. Install the lubricated primary Piston assembly last. Push the primary Piston with a smooth tool then put on the new Piston retainer and reinstall the master cylinder parts.
