2001 Buick Regal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to perform remote programming of the Engine Control Module on 2001 Buick Regal?
A: The first step in Engine Control Module remote programming requires ignition OFF mode while connecting the Tech 2 to the data link connector (DLC). You should first activate the ignition while keeping the engine in an OFF state before making sure all vehicle accessories remain deactivated. The Tech 2 tool requires users to select Service Programming followed by the vehicle identification process. Select the module for programming and determine the programming operation needed. Compare the VIN displayed on the screen to the actual VIN of the vehicle and enter correct VIN data at Techline terminal when the two values do not match. Exit Service Programming from the screen by turning OFF the Tech 2 unit while removing its power connections from the vehicle. Plug the Tech 2 into the Techline terminal after which Service Programming must be selected and Tech 2 should be selected as the active tool. Verify the displayed VIN before choosing the specific module update type either as Normal calibration updates or Vehicle Configuration Index (VCI) for missing VINs or Reconfigure for tire size changes. Begin the download process by choosing the suitable calibration file and checking all electrical connections before choosing Reprog to transfer the new calibration to the Tech 2. Turn OFF the Tech 2 before disconnecting it from the Techline terminal following the download process. Restore the Tech 2 to the DLC before turning it ON while simultaneously switching ON the ignition key with the engine power off. Select Service Programming but interrupt the procedure only when it proves unsuccessful or remain without cutting off ignition power while verifying the proper connections of PCM and DLC and executing a software update until attempting control module reprogramming. The control module requires immediate replacement under these circumstances because programming it will not work (see Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Replacement). Select Program after downloading the file and then exit Service Programming. Shutdown the ignition system for 30 seconds after which shut down the Tech 2 interface. Completing the replacement of a control module requires execution of the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure as well as GM Oil Life System - Resetting and the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) Complete System Set Procedure followed by Programming Theft Deterrent System Components.
