- Q: How to replace the front shock absorber assembly on 2001 Cadillac Catera?A: To replace strut assembly, start by raising and supporting the height of the car securely, allowing it to be supported using jack stands, opposite the end where the components are being removed. Start by disconnecting the front tire and wheel, and then disconnect the wiring of the wheel speed sensors, brake wear indicators, and brake flex hose clip from the strut assembly. After that, take away the brake flex hose and hold the brake caliper in place so it does not damage the flex hose. Go ahead and take out the brake caliper bolts from the Steering Knuckle and remove the brake caliper removing the brake hydraulic system. Then you get rid of the stabilizer shaft link nut and the stabilizer shaft link from the strut assembly; lower strut mounting bolts from the Steering Knuckle. Lower the vehicle and remove the upper support plate protective cap, upper support plate nut and the upper support plate to retrieve strut assembly with the help of the wheel well. For installation, fit the new strut assembly into the strut tower through the wheel well, fit the upper support plate, and then tighten the upper support nut to 55 nm (41 ft. Lbs.). When installing a new protective cap for the upper support nut, lift the vehicle and secure the Steering Knuckle on to the strut with the use of new bolts that will need to be in a front to the rear direction of the vehicle. Set these bolts in a snug position because final specifications will be determined after camber corrections. Next, panel on the stabilizer shaft link to the strut assembly, tightening the stabilizer shaft link nut to 65 nm (48 ft. Lbs.). Clean the holes where the brake caliper assembly bolts need engaging using an m12 x 1.5 tap, install brake caliper the Steering Knuckle using new bolts with gm p/n 12345493 goodwrench 272 threadlocker, or equivalent, on the brake caliper to Steering Knuckle engage the bolts to the value of 95 nm(70ft. Lbs.)+37 degrees using the torque/angle meter(J 36660-A). Finally, reconnect the brake flex hose, clip, wheel speed sensor wire, and brake wear indicator wires to the strut assembly, put on the front tire and wheel, bring down the vehicle and set up the wheel alignment.
